Letter from the Editor

A few weeks ago a friend, finding herself stuck in a dentist chair longer than expected, asked me to pick up her kindergartener from school. Of course I was happy to, especially since the two of them had taken care of our dog, Spaulding, recently while we were on vacation. Besides, I was quite experienced in after-school pick up; for years I walked up to our neighborhood school every afternoon to collect my own children.
Since I was listed as her emergency contact and my friend had called the school to let them know I was approved to pick up little Grace, I was confident I’d have no trouble there. But Grace and I are not well acquainted, so I was not so sure how comfortable she would be walking home with me. Then I had a thought: I’ll take Spaulding with me; she knows Spaulding. What a great idea! (Those of you in the Frisco School District are probably cringing for me about now, because you know what I did not know: due to an unfortunate biting incident involving a dog and a child at a local school, canines are not allowed on campus. Period.) But I didn’t know “The Rule,” so I leashed the dog and off we went.
As Spaulding and I stood in the schoolyard, blissfully unaware of our infraction, I began to wonder why no one was standing within a 20 ft radius of me. It couldn’t be fear of Spaulding – he’s a 15 lb. long-haired Chihuahua/Dachshund mix we refer to as a Chi-weinie. If it wasn’t fear, what was the problem?
The mystery was solved when the school principal strode purposefully from the building straight up to me and kindly, but firmly, explained “The Rule.”
Why am I telling you this story? Because as the new editor of Frisco STYLE Magazine I feel a bit like I did that day. I’ve been in journalism most of my adult life, so I have some experience. But being several years removed from my last deadline, there are days I feel as if I’m in the middle of the schoolyard, unsure of what the rules are.
Happily the team at FSM is made up of extremely talented, enthusiastic people who, rather than maintaining a 20 ft. radius, have formed a supportive circle around me.
Everyone enjoys feeling welcomed and this month’s issue reminds us of the importance of welcoming our service men and women home for the holidays. Initially, they may feel out of place, but we can all make a difference by expressing our appreciation to them and helping them feel the safety and security of home. We also have some great recipes that will make your holiday guests feel welcome. And, don’t miss our Family story about a local family that is more thankful this year than ever before.
Happy Thanksgiving!
